Often considered a smaller Pompeii due to its more contained archaeological digs, Ercolano offers a range of unforgettable experiences that set it apart from its 'sister' buried by Vesuvius.
Places to visit
The Archaeological Park of Ercolano shines for its uniquely preserved state in the world: visitors can still admire the marvelous colorful frescoes that once adorned the luxurious Roman villas. Exploring the intact buildings and wandering through the streets of ancient Herculaneum, one almost feels like a part of the ancient civilization that inhabited it.
After the visit to the excavations, just a short walk along the main street leads to new wonders: the noble palaces of the Golden Mile, built by the nobility of the Bourbon court in the 1700s. Among these stands out Villa Campolieto, an enchanting aristocratic residence that can still be visited today.
Ercolano is also the most convenient and direct access point to the cone of Vesuvius: a short shuttle trip is enough to reach the world's most famous volcano to peer into the mouth of the crater and be awestruck by an incredible view of the Gulf.
How to get there
By car: Highway A1 Napoli – Salerno, exit Ercolano Scavi
By train: EAV Circumvesuviana towards Torre Annunziata - Oplonti or Poggiomarino (Via Scafati), Ercolano Scavi - Vesuvio station."
