Procida is the smallest and less known of the three islands of the campanian archipelago, but its beauty is perfectly on par with that of its sisters: in ancient roman times it was already used as a tranquil vacationing spot immersed in greenery.
Nowadays, the colourful villages and natural side of the island can be experienced freely and in a short timeframe thanks to comfortable guided tours.
What to visit
Once in Procida, it is natural for visitor to be in the mood for a nice stroll among the colourful houses of the seaside villages. Marina Grande is the ideal spot for a bit of shopping and grabbing a bite to eat, while Marina di Corricella is quieter and more secluded, perfect for who wants to walk along the shore far away from stress and crowds.
One of the most panoramic and suggestive places of the island is Terra Murata, a medieval village fortified by the noble d'Avalos family to defend the island from pirate raids; here the aristocrats built d'Avalos Palace in 1500, using it as their residence. In 1830 it was turned into a prison until 1988, but today it is thankfully open to visit for whoever wants to discover its rich history.
How to get there
Ferries and hydrofoils to the island depart mainly from Naples and Pozzuoli; in summer it is also possible to start out from the port in Sorrento.
