Check in with your Askos Tours representative at the main gate of Herculaneum, near the red ticket office. The representative will be holding an Askos Tours sign. With your “skip-the-line” tickets ready, bypass the queue and head straight into the ruins complex. Here you will meet your expert archaeological guide and begin your guided walking tour.
Like nearby Pompeii, life in the UNESCO-listed city of Herculaneum came to a catastrophic end following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Today, the preserved buildings, mosaics, and everyday artifacts offer a fascinating glimpse into life here under the Roman Empire thousands of years ago.
Explore UNESCO-listed Herculaneum
At the beginning of your 2-hour walking tour, your expert archaeologist guide will introduce you to the history and culture of Herculaneum, describing the layout of the ruins and daily life before the eruption.
First, head to a panoramic terrace viewpoint and admire sweeping views of this famous archaeological site from above. In the background, you will see the imposing peak of Mount Vesuvius.
During the tour, you will discover the main highlights, including the Sacellum of the Augustales with its spectacular frescoes, the House of the Samnites, and the Gymnasium. Explore the House of Neptune and Amphitrite, believed to have been inhabited by a wealthy merchant, the Thermopolium—where hot food was once prepared and sold—and the baths. Along the way, you will gain valuable insight into the private lives of those who once called Herculaneum home.
End of the guided walking tour
After two hours spent discovering life in Herculaneum thousands of years ago, the walking tour will conclude inside the ancient ruins.
